Health Tech Venture Capital Rebounds in 2025, Driven by AI Innovations

Venture capital funding for healthcare technology startups has shown a strong recovery in 2025, with investment through the third quarter already surpassing last year's total, according to a recent report by PitchBook. The resurgence is largely attributed to the growing interest in artificial intelligence (AI) applications within the healthcare sector.
AI Leads the Charge in Health Tech Funding
The health tech sector has seen a significant influx of capital, with startups raising $3.9 billion in the third quarter alone. While this represents a slight decrease from the $4 billion and $4.4 billion raised in the first and second quarters respectively, the overall trend remains positive. The number of deals increased by 12% compared to the previous quarter, indicating sustained investor interest.
Notably, the average deal size has reached a record high of $7.7 million, driven by higher valuations, particularly for companies developing AI tools. Some of the largest funding rounds in Q3 went to AI-focused firms, including a $243 million Series C for Ambience Healthcare, which specializes in clinical documentation and coding, and a $210 million Series B raise for OpenEvidence, an AI medical information platform.
Practical AI Applications Dominate the Market
The health tech sector is currently focused on "practical" AI products that enhance workflows and manage administrative tasks. Ambient notetaking scribes, which record patient-doctor conversations and automatically generate clinical notes, have emerged as one of the fastest-growing AI applications. Companies like Ambience and Abridge are at the forefront of this technology, with Abridge securing multiple large funding rounds this year.
Another significant area for AI investment is revenue cycle management. Since 2021, companies in this space have raised over $1.2 billion in venture capital funding. However, the report notes that more revolutionary technologies, such as patient-facing agentic AI and platforms for early prediction of major health events, are still in development and have yet to achieve widespread commercialization.
Market Dynamics and Future Outlook
While funding has rebounded, the IPO market for health tech companies remains cautious. The third quarter saw no major health technology initial public offerings, following the public debuts of Hinge Health and Omada Health earlier in the year. Policy and economic uncertainties, including the potential impact of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, are likely contributing to companies reconsidering IPOs.
Despite this, the third quarter witnessed a significant increase in exits for venture capital-backed health technology firms, with 42 companies achieving exits. More than half of these were acquisitions of smaller seed and Series A startups, suggesting a trend towards consolidation in the industry.
As the health tech sector continues to evolve, investors and companies alike are navigating a landscape shaped by technological advancements, regulatory changes, and shifting market dynamics. With ongoing policy uncertainty and a wait-and-see approach from late-stage startups, major health tech listings are not expected for the remainder of 2025, potentially pushing new IPO activity into 2026.
